Private grounds, and a lawn nobody else is on
The grounds are for guests only. There is a lawn large enough to lose people on, a pond garden with sheltered seating, and on a clear day St Michael's Mount sitting in the bay below.
The lawn
Space, which is the rarest thing in Cornwall in August
The main lawn runs away from the house towards the boundary planting. In practice it is where guests read, where children are allowed to run, and where people sit out with a drink they brought themselves — there is no bar here, and no one selling you anything.
Loungers and garden seating are put out through the season.
The pond garden
Water, a fountain, and somewhere out of the wind
The pond sits below the house with a fountain at its centre and a deck alongside it. It is the sheltered corner of the grounds — the place to be when the wind is up off the Atlantic, which in West Cornwall is often.
The planting around it is mature and deliberately Cornish: palms, cordylines and cordoned shrubs that take salt air without complaint.
