Newlyn
Britain's biggest fishing port by value of catch, and the reason the painters came.
Newlyn is a working harbour, not a picture of one. The market runs on the fish landed that night, the boats come in early, and the town keeps its own hours. The Newlyn School of artists settled here in the 1880s because the light, the sea and the working people were all in one place — the same reason Stanhope Forbes built Higher Faugan above it in 1904.
From the house you walk down Chywoone Hill into the harbour. The walk back up is the price of the view.
